8-Week Bathroom Renovation Timeline
Wondering how long your bathroom renovation will actually take? Based on hundreds of bathroom projects we've completed in Klang Valley, here's a realistic week-by-week breakdown of what to expect.
Week 1: Planning & Material Selection
Before any demolition begins, we finalize every detail:
- Review and approve final layout design
- Select tiles, fixtures, sanitary ware
- Confirm plumbing and electrical requirements
- Order long-lead items (custom vanity, imported fixtures)
Timeline risk: Custom items can take 3-4 weeks to arrive. Order early!
Week 2: Demolition & Hacking
Time to tear everything out. This is messy but satisfying:
- Remove old tiles, fixtures, and sanitary ware
- Hack walls if layout is changing
- Dispose of debris
- Inspect hidden plumbing and electrical (surprises often appear here!)
Pro tip: Use a different bathroom during renovation. Seriously. Don't try to use a bathroom mid-renovation.
Week 3-4: Plumbing & Waterproofing
The most critical phase. Rush this and you'll regret it:
- Install new water supply and drainage pipes
- Move plumbing points if layout changed
- Apply waterproofing membrane (minimum 2-3 coats)
- Conduct 48-hour water ponding test
Never skip: Waterproofing test. Leaks discovered after tiling costs 10x more to fix.
Week 4-5: Wall & Floor Tiling
Your bathroom starts taking shape:
- Install floor tiles (starting from drain towards door)
- Install wall tiles (bottom to top, ensuring level alignment)
- Apply grout and sealant
- Allow proper curing time (3-5 days)
Timeline buffer: Intricate tile patterns (herringbone, mosaic) add 2-3 extra days.
Week 6: Ceiling & Electrical Work
What happens this week:
- Install ceiling (plaster ceiling or PVC panels)
- Wire lighting fixtures and exhaust fan
- Install electrical points and switches
- Connect water heater and test functionality
Week 7: Fixtures & Sanitary Ware Installation
Your bathroom is almost ready:
- Install toilet bowl and bidet
- Mount basin and vanity cabinet
- Install shower screen or bathtub enclosure
- Fit mirrors, towel racks, accessories
- Apply silicone sealant at joints
Week 8: Final Touches & Handover
The last mile:
- Touch-up paint and grout
- Final cleaning and polishing
- Test all fixtures (no leaks, proper drainage)
- Walk-through inspection with you
- Handover warranty documentation
Common Delays & How to Prevent Them
From our experience, these cause most timeline overruns:
- Material delays (30% of projects): Order materials 2 weeks before start date
- Change orders mid-project (25%): Finalize design before demolition starts
- Hidden plumbing issues (20%): Budget extra 1-2 weeks for old buildings (>20 years)
- Weather delays (10%): Outdoor waterproofing affected by rain
